Laura Mason, Health Improvement Facilitator at S-O-T Council outlines how North Staffs achieved Gold:

Staff health and wellbeing is evidently part of North Staffs Mind's culture, with staff at all levels mentioning the supportive and open culture and the accessibility of managers, including senior managers. Also of great importance was the awareness amongst staff about what is available to them in terms of health and wellbeing.

We were very impressed by North Staffs Mind's Health and Wellbeing Statement of Aspiration outlining the support and tools available. This is also covered as part of Induction and all staff mentioned regular communication on a variety of topics relating to health and wellbeing.

Staff praised the supportiveness of their managers in relation to long-term conditions and caring responsibilities. Staff are comfortable raising mental health issues and praised both the internal and external support available. A further indication of the organisational commitment to staff's mental health is that Time to Change has just approved an action plan to sign up to the Time to Change Employer Pledge.

There are opportunities for career development. Staff are encouraged to offer and deliver health and wellbeing activities if they would like to do so and are organising RED January to promote physical activity and raise money for NS Mind.

Staff are given the day off for their birthday, and those with at least 4 years' service get an additional self-care day off too, where they are encouraged to take time for themselves. Staff also value the two treat days per year, where activities such as tai chi or massages are available to all staff.
