London Marathon for the Maccas Project

My name is Will Sutton. On 23rd April, I’m going to be running the 2017 London Marathon with my friend, Jack Brown, in aid of North Staffs Mind and the Maccas Project, with a joint target to raise £4,000.

North Staffs Mind is a mental health charity which offers a range of services focusing on the mental health and wellbeing of adults, children and young people in North Staffordshire. These services include counselling and supported housing.

The Maccas Project is a subsidiary of North Staffs Mind set up in memory of a school friend of mine (Tom ‘Maccas’ McCauley) who took his own life in 2012 at the age of 19 after suffering from psychosis. The Maccas Project was initiated to help raise money and raise awareness for North Staffs Mind to fight the ongoing battle against mental health issues in young males. Since Tom passed away in 2012, several of Tom’s friends and family, including myself, have raised money to support the charity.

Mind means a lot to me personally. In February 2016, a close friend of mine Ed Ridgway, died suddenly from a heart attack at the age of 23. Ed was also a close friend of Tom’s and was a big ambassador for North Staffs Mind (The “Maccas” project). As an active fundraiser, Ed took part in events including the Potters ‘Arf to raise money and awareness. In recent years Ed and I had become close friends, we attended St. Joseph’s 6th Form College together, worked for the same company, boxed and trained together at the Orme Boxing Club in Newcastle. When Ed passed away, his family asked that his friends continue to support North Staffs Mind in his memory and to carry on the great work that Ed had started.

The London Marathon is an event that will allow me to do something meaningful on a larger scale to raise money in the memory of both friends, in aid of a charity based here in Staffordshire that is helping more and more people locally. So far my fundraising activities have included climbing Mount Snowdon, and running the Liverpool 10k.

There will be several more fundraising events to help reach my goal which include:

  • Golf day in February
  • 24 hour Cyclethon at Tesco Hanley 17th & 18th February
  • Music fundraiser night at Blakeys Newcastle-under-Lyme date 17th April £5 per ticket

I would like to ask for the support of all who can help me in this very worthy cause, for a charity that is very close to me. Any donations would be hugely appreciated.
